Once again, the wonderful team of Artesane share the second part of the trousers adjustments with us! Thanks so much!

HOW IS MADE THE CROTCH OF A PAIR OF TROUSERS ?
The crotch of a pair of trousers is the curved seam that goes from the waistband center front to the waistband center back. It is made of two parts : the rise (the less curved part) and the curve.
You can alter the rise or the curve, or both at the same time. However, we recommend starting by altering only the rise of the crotch as it’s easier to adjust and most of the time, it’s enough to modify the few issue you might have with the inseam, seat or waist area.
WHICH SOLUTION FOR WHICH PROBLEM ?

I made a pair of Fleece pants but they slide down at the rear when I sit. How do I alter the pattern so they don’t slide down from the rear?
Hi Danette, in that case, you would need to lengthen the crotch line at the back (step 3).
Thank you! I need to add 3” to my back crotch. When I follow these steps, the pattern seems distorted at the center bavk and the side seam. Do these need to be adjusted as well?
What a wonder contribution. It’s in subjects like this that the everyday person is given a glimpse into the artistry and technical expertise of a craft so rarely seen.
Thanks so much 🙂
Thank you Elizabethe!
A fabulous piece of craftmanship, thank you so much for sharing. Looking forward to apply your advice in practice.
What approach would you recommend for altering elastic band trousers? I have a pair with high waist, that are also too wide for me, and I want to lower the waist to stop them sliding down to the hips. I intended to simply move the wasitband lower, but there are also some darts, that might complicate the alteration.
How about you just change the elastic and make it shorter? It would be tighter around your waist and wouldn’t slide down. It might be easier that altering the waistband.
Thank you for replying so quickly!
I though about it, but lower waist would suit me better also as I have a short torso and some remaining curves from pregnancy.
Hello, I need to alter a thick pair of carhartt insulated overall pants. Crotch is too tight, determined need to do number 6. Thank you for your guide:) I don’t understand how I would apply this guide to adjust these pants, it just isn’t clicking for me:( Can you please give me some pointers to help me understand? Thanks so much in advance! 🙂
I have been given a denim jumpsuit whuch is too long in the body and the crutch hangs about 4 inches below my bottom. Any ideas would be welcome
Hello!
Is the adjustment just done to the front OR back?
EG WIDEN OR SHORTEN THE CROTCH CURVE – I just adjust the front piece?
The bum looks good!
Thanks
My Jeans have a long torso, I believe the answer to the problem would be either to replace the zipper and alter the fabric from there or to alter the crotch to make it smaller. I’m very new to this sort of thing and I couldn’t tell if any of the articles here could help me with my problem.
Waist 32.1/2”. Pattern is 30” dif = 2.1/2” extra
Hip size ok
Pattern low rise I need higher rise therefor I also need to alter crotch length by nearly 2”
Would you alter this amount above patter line?
I have a pair of knit pants that are too big in the waist and crouch. If I take in the crouch area in the back will it take care of the problems.
Or should I sew that seam from front to back? There are no seams on the side just the one from front to back that sews the crouch area.
Without a side seam, that’s a much more complicated problem to fix. Try taking in the center back and center front seam to see if the fit gets better.
Thank you so much! This was perfectly explained! Bravo! This is the first time I have understood a whole tutorial about how to alter the crotch! Excellent work!!
When I walk, the thighs of the pants seems pulling back. How to fix the problem please?
I have what looks like cat whiskers at the crotch area…. like 2 open triangles pointing outwards. I’m still learning, but i’m not sure if it’s number six where I need to add or what I need to do to fix them. I’m still learning how to alter my patterns I buy.
